Building Strong Companies Starts with Building Strong Teams

If we accept that people are the foundation of every organization, then we also must accept the responsibility that comes with that belief.

How we build teams, support them, and invest in their growth isn’t secondary to the work—it is foundational. Especially in early-stage environments, where every hire, every decision, and every dynamic has an outsized impact on what a company becomes.

At LabCentral, we are experts at how to best support early-stage biotech companies as they navigate the complexities of building their science and their businesses. But increasingly, we’ve been asking: how can we better support the people behind that work?

Because what we know is this—breakthrough science doesn’t happen without strong, engaged, and well-supported teams.

The reality of building teams in early-stage biotech

Early-stage companies operate in a constant state of motion. Priorities shift. Resources are constrained. Teams are small, and leaders are often ‘building the plane while flying it,’ as is often described. In that environment, human resources and people strategy can feel like a luxury — something to formalize later, once the company is more established.

But the reality is that many of the most important people-related decisions happen early and don’t evolve without intentionality:

  • Role definition
  • Feedback delivery
  • Team communication and collaboration
  • Articulation of shared values
  • Shaping of team culture – both intentional and organic

These elements compound over time. And without the ongoing care and intentionality, they can become friction points that slow progress, create misalignment, and negatively impact employee engagement.

For many teams, the challenge isn’t a lack of intention—it’s a lack of access to expertise, guidance, and resources that help leaders navigate moments that don’t come with a playbook.

Expanding support where it matters most

That’s why we’ve expanded our offerings at LabCentral to include a new suite of human resources and people strategy support for our resident companies. This includes dedicated office hours with our People Strategy team, as well as a series of professional development seminars designed to address the real, day-to-day challenges leaders are facing, like navigating generational dynamics, giving and receiving candid feedback, and building emotional intelligence within teams.

These are not abstract concepts. They are practical skills that shape how teams function, how decisions are made, and ultimately, how companies grow. They’re foundational.

And importantly, we’re making these resources accessible at no additional cost—because at this stage, access can make all the difference.

Investing in people as a pathway to impact

At LabCentral, we often talk about supporting science, business, and people as interconnected pillars. None of them operate in isolation.

When we invest in people, we’re not stepping away from the mission, we’re accelerating it.

We’re creating the conditions for better decision-making, stronger collaboration, and more resilient organizations. In a field where timelines are lengthy and the stakes are high, those conditions matter.

This is just one step in how we continue to evolve that support. And like the companies we work with, we’ll keep learning, iterating, and expanding what’s possible.

Because at the end of the day, the strength of a company is a reflection of the people who build it. And they deserve the same level of intention, investment, and care as the science itself.
